Sometimes we all have days when we just feel wrong. We may not know why we feel that way, we just do. Taking time to think about how we are feeling isn't something we give ourselves in these fast-paced times.
"No time for looking at why I'm feeling the way I do, I've got work to do, kids to take care of, meals to make, groups to attend."
What we lose track of is that if we don't take the time to check in with ourselves, we will wear away our health and our capacity to do all the things we need to do. There is where the HALT tool comes in to help us do a quick check in with ourselves.
[H]ungry - am I hungry? What have I been eating lately? Is it enough and is it enough of the right kind of foods? Junk doesn't cut it, and we oft feel better when we eat healthier foods.
[A]ngry - How am I feeling? Am I angry? If I am, what is causing that anger? Sometimes we can walk through our days feeling something negative, and we don't take time to acknowledge it or look at it. What is making me angry? What can I choose to do to make myself feel differently? What are my solutions and options?
[L]onely - have you been spending a lot of time at work? Haven't had time to spend with your friends, family or partner? Loneliness can have an impact on us. Sometimes we have to schedule in social time. Take time to play with your kids, talk to your friend or share a meal with your partner.
[T] ired - Are you getting enough sleep? Is it restful or are you tossing and turning all night? Rest is essential and plays several crucial roles in our health. When we get busy, we tend to take away from our sleep so that we can get things done. Taking away too much sleep or going without enough for too long can make it so that we are functioning poorly through the day. Turn off the screens, but the work down and get some sleep. Fresh eyes can create a world of difference.
So next time you just don't feel right, stop, take a few deeps breaths and talk yourself through the HALT process. Checking in with yourself can change your reality and make your experiences happier and more helpful.
